Eyes on the prize for Cossack artists

Only days remain before winners are announced for Australia’s most unique and prestigious regional art prize, the Cossack Art Awards.

Winners will share in a prize pool of more than $100,000 over eleven categories, making the Cossack Art Awards one of the richest regional art prizes in the country.

Presented by the City of Karratha and Rio Tinto the popular event is a highlight of the Pilbara’s arts and culture calendar with a three week public exhibition and jam-packed program of community events.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the Cossack Art Awards showcases some of the best artistic talent from the Pilbara and Australia-wide.

“Every year the Cossack Art Awards dazzles us with some of the best artwork from the Pilbara and across the nation and this year’s exhibition is sure to be another stellar showcase of outstanding work,” Cr Long said.

“Of course it’s not just the exhibition that makes Cossack the highlight of the region’s cultural calendar. We have an exciting program of events throughout the exhibition this year with a range community activities suitable for all ages.”

Rio Tinto general manager Rail Operations Zara Fisher said she was looking forward to returning to Cossack for the 2016 Cossack Art Awards.

“I encourage everyone to get out to Cossack during the exhibition to take in the art and maybe even pick up an amazing piece,“ Ms Fisher said.

“This year’s public program ensures the whole community can get involved – from the Family Day to floor talks, to the ‘Pimms and Pastels’ workshop, panel discussions and the ever-popular Twilight Tunes – there is something for everyone.”

The Cossack Art Awards is presented by the City of Karratha and Rio Tinto with the support of Atco Power, Cleanaway, Ibis Styles, Onsite Rental Group, IAS Fine Art Logistics, Chevron and GWN7.
